Skimmers do more then just pull out DOC's from the water . I think the added oxygen into a already limited amount of water that is usualy sealed rather tightly with a lid would at night help to lower the CO2's swiing during the P.M hours.. But thats just my opinion ?

Makes sense Linda. Mine has nano has tested out fine without a skimmer for last couple of months.

Keeping up with water changes is the key I think.

Still I think using a poly-filter & carbon is good idea in rear section.

The POLY-FILTER is for filtering and purifying both fresh and salt water aquariums. It is a formulation of a special patented material bonded to a synthetic matrix. By means of a unique proprietary process, the POLY-FILTER is made impervious to salt and is also organic loving to certain materials. It can absorb and adsorb contaminants and other toxic materials found in nature or added to fresh and salt water with or without fish and invertebrates. Medication added to fresh and salt water aquariums for treatment of diseased fish will automatically be removed by the POLY-FILTER after serving their intended purpose before the medication can produce a toxic effect on the fish.

The POLY-FILTER is non-toxic and harmless to biological filtration because it allows a sufficient amount of ammonia to reach the biological filter in order to sustain the bacteria culture. The POLY-FILTER provides a supplemental means for removal of ammonia when the biological filter is unable to break down the excess ammonia and its concentration increases rapidly. Then the POLY-FILTER adsorbs the excess ammonia while the biological filter readjusts to higher ammonia input levels. Changes color when exhausted. 4" x 8".

A very technical and thorough product! What's in it for us hobbyists? Plenty! Poly-Filter Pad material, when used accordingly, remove ALL traces of copper treatment. Continued use of kalkwassers leave lead behind. Poly-Filter Pad material get-the-lead-out! Phosphates? Not a problem. The use of Poly-Filter Pad material in high-flow areas work like carbon, only better. All heavy metals are attracted to the woven matrix of polymer threads and are held there... no leaching back into the solution!
There are freshwater benefits a well. Poly-Filter Pad material can be used to prefilter tap water prior to making up sea salt mixes. (My simple DIY PVC Tap Water Filter). With Poly-Filters, all water impurities like phosphates, nitrates, copper, silicates, and even ammonia are absorbed, and the pads can be regenerated by simple rinsing in saltwater (saltwater use can be regenerated by the reverse, rinsing in freshwater). Cut 'em, slice 'em or roll 'em up in a canister filter (read product reviews & compare prices). They even make large square pads for enhanced chemical scavenging and can be placed under the drip lid of most wet/dry trickle filters.

The Poly-Filter is one of those everyday staples that the hobby demands if you want to insure long-term success with your investment in reef, as well fish-only keeping. Water quality and purity is the golden ring we all reach for, and Poly-Bio-Marine Inc. makes it just that much easier to worry about other things!

These magnificent little pads priced at about $5.35 to $9.95 each (mail order vs. retail) have been around for years and deserve another spotlight. I won't go into the research and laboratory findings that make this product the king of sponges, but I will tell you to visit their Website or contact them for more enlightenment.

i just use a 10 gallon sump under a 10gallon tank with a plenum, chaetto, and a small clean up crew and i'm sticking to it.putting a skimmer on a nano is going to need adjusted all the time and create unstability.why skim when you can change water so easily in a nano?

Agree...I ordered a Rio Nano skimmer in a moment of weakness. --- Like Linda, I am not going to like the look of it on tank. If I can figure out way to mod it or tank to hang on back, I might just use it.

Think what I will do is run it overnight one day a week just before water change day. Just to see what it turns up.

True. I open the lid during the day (not the whole cover, just the lid) before I leave for work in the morning, and put it back down before I go to bed at night. Not only does it help with the CO2's, but it also helps keep the temperature somewhat consistent.

SW is somewhat like computers -- ask 10 people the same question and chances are you'll get 10 different answers! :laughing0 Keeps things interesting, that's for sure.

You'd be quite lucky if just "10" (different answers) - :p
