In addition to the light on my aquarium, it also gets a lot of afternoon natural light. Is that a good thing or a bad thing ? I can block it out if necessary.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If you have excess nutrients and phosphates in the system, natural sunlight is going to cause algae problems. IMO.

I tried it along time ago and had recurring problems with cynobacteria.

And in some instances it can heat the tank if the duration of light is long enough.

Not a bad thing. Just like all things, in moderation.

My fish seem to love natural sunlight, It comes in for about two hours in the morning.

The position of my tank allows for up to 5 hours of sunlight at a time during summer months, however broken up through my small windows as it may be.Winter is quickly approaching and that time has been cut in half at the very least. My system is fairly new with no fish yet so not sure if it helps much.

Would the same advice go for a fresh water tank. Will it give an algae build up ? I have had so many different opinions.
