So a buddy is giving away some things from his nano reef because he is upgrading to a 100 gallon tank and I'm trying to figure out what types of crabs these are, problem is I know the little crab(without the shell) climbs out of his tank sometimes and sits out on the rock and my tank is fully submerged unlike his....I'm guessing I needs air to survive so I most likely wont tank that crab. Any idea what any of these guys are though?

The crabs in the shell are hermit crabs.

Not sure on the other crab.

I think the snail may be a margherita snail.

Hermits will go where ever they feel they can go safely.

I am not sure the other crab is reef safe. Keep a close eye on it.

The easiest way to tell if any kind of crab is safe in your aquarium is to look at its claws. Pointy sharp claws mean its predatory and not reef safe. Rounded dull claws mean its an algae eater and reef safe. This is somewhat of a generalization but is usually pretty accurate. Also some peope consider all crabs to be unsafe as you will sometimes get a renegade regardless of the species.;)

I've seen that crab many times along the atlantic coast, usually on beaches at night or on docks/jetties. I've always thought they were a relative of the sally light foot crab.

hmm thanks guys, I think I'm gonna tell him to just bring the crabs to a LFS because I don't really feel like creating competition with my electric blue hermits which look a lot nicer anyways...
