I've had this Berlin turbo since 2001 I really need a new one this one just isn't doing the job anymore. I've been through several pumps and impellers and its just not skimming like before. I wanna upgrade to a new one around the $300 - $350 dollar range is max. I just need to know what is being used out there in that range for a 180 tank? There are just so many different models out there to choose from. It will have to be in sump. I have a 12" x 12" area for it to fit in a 55G Sump/Refugium.

I have a super reef octopus 3000 on my 180 and really like it. They are great skimmers. The bubble blaster pumps are tops

I use an Eshopps S-150 cone skimmer on my 125 and really like it so far. Small footprint, extremely quiet, you can fully disassemble it, nice large and easy to remove skimmer cup. But the tank has only been setup for a couple months (but it has made a lot of nice dark skimmate so far). They make an S-200 as well. Found one on Amazon that is nicely priced: Amazon.com: Eshopps S-200 Cone Skimmer - Up to 200 gal.: Pet Supplies

I run a vertex 180 and have been very happy with it. Quality construction, easy to set up and use, and produces a thick dark skim. I think they update to the alpha series which has gotten good reviews from what I have read.

A skimmer can only remove the excess organics that are in your tank; none can produce skimmate from clean water. Unless you are having high nutrient or nuisance algae problems, there's a strong chance your old Berlin is working perfectly fine.

I don't know I haven't got any good skimmate out of it in over a month.

Are you battling high nitrates or nuisance algae? That's how I determine the performance of any type filtration, or decide if it's even needed.
