so I haven't bee here in awhile but I was going to get a PS for my 29 gallon tank. My nitrites fluctuate and so does my alkalinity. My zoos where doing great but now are receding and don't have signs of snails. My kenya tree has never done well either. The LFS said a protein skimmer would be a waste of time for my size tank. I know the PS wouldn't help directly but maybe indirectly? I also know a refugium is better for the nitrites but I don't have room for one now. any suggestions? Thanks.

You really should get a skimmer. It will DEFINITELY help with nitrates. Lots of people use skimmers on small tanks.

Also what would I need to make my tank more stable? I have a wet/dry but I am worried about that nitrite factory, would it be more beneficial to take out the bio balls and just make it a sump or to make a 10 gal refugium out of an old tank.

Thanks for the advice. How long should it be running for?

Bioballs are no big deal in terms of nitrates if you clean them regularly. I would probably do the refugium thing, as that gets nitrates out of the tank, but it's up to you.

    Skimmers are run 24/7.
