I've gone through too many heaters to rely on just one. If you truly want to be stressed free you need 2 heaters in the tank, and a spare outside. I have 2 spares just in case since power outages have some how broke my heaters in the past so never know.

Also on the RKL unit: I have one too, but don't use the heater function after I read some terrible stories of it malfunctioning and cooking a tank or in your case, it could be letting it cool down. Not sure if the temp probe went or something was wrong with the unit in those cases, but it made me think twice. I'm working on a power fail-safe system now that will kill the power to all heaters if the temp exceeds 83º. But that wouldn't help if the temp drops =/.

Yea definately going to keep an extra on hand from now often. The heater function worked great for a while, UNTIL i picked up a 10' usb extension chord and have it hooked up to my comp with my tv as the monitor. I am almost positive that these weird issues on the PC4/RKL have been caused by my computer/tv going to sleep and even possibly plugging in the SID to the USB backwards. Sinec ive changed this, things seem to be working okay.
