I recently bought a yellow banded marroon clown from my LFS, He advised me on a pair and said hed be more of them coming in this coming week. But speaking to others iv been told it might not be too good an idea as they could fight to the death O.O. The maroon i have now has only been in teh tank a week or so and is very shy sticking to teh corners of teh tank or shyly hiding in teh rock. Who should i listen to ?

I would listen to the people on this site if they advised me not to add a second maroon clown

people on this site, who advise you not to add a second maroon , dont want anything from you
people at the LFS who advise you to add a second maroon clown, do want something from you

They will either pair up or fight to the death. If you get another clown, make sure it's smaller than the one you have now. This may cause them to pair up rather than to fight. That being said, once you have a mated pair of maroon clowns in your tank, be prepared for them to not tolerate any other tank mates as they are one of the most aggressive species of clownfish.

Hi Amcarrig - thats very interesting.

if current one is shy, and not established/ territorial as yet and he gets a new smaller one, then would you think the odds of them pairing up are in his favour?

Im interested as I also like these clown fish species

Shy is not a word I would ever associate with a maroon clownfish  Yes, if you're going to add another clown, now would probably be the best time to do so.

imo buy clowns in pairs from a store, never buy them seperate it's asking for trouble they'll either get along fine within a few hours or one will be dead and feeding the cleanup crew

My yellow striped maroons are as friendly as they come. They don't attack (and I have seen the ones that do), and when they swim at the surface looking for food they allow me to pet them. A big factor in them pairing up is to make sure one is *significantly* smaller than the other. When introducing the new one, place him in a safe container that can be submerged and allows for water flow. I used a small hamsterball in mie case, you can see the pics in my album. I kept the little guy in there for 3 or 4 days, then released him. That allows the established maroon to get used to him, while being protected. Another thing you can do to help it along is to rearrange the rocks a bit, so established territory no longer exists. I flipped one rock upside down. I hope this helps out. :)

I have a gold/ maroon clown that is hosting my duncans and my wife wanted to get a small one from a friend, so she brought it home and he was considerably smaller than our other. When we did get him in the other just attacked him so badly and tore his fins up. I took him out and stuck him in my hob tank to give him shelter, but he ended up dying overnite. I like the idea of using the hamster ball.
