Ok you all know I am running a filter as I am paranoid of not have a stable enough biological filteration system. Now my problem is that my filters water outtake is way too strong and I have it on the lowest level. I can't keep any corals on the side of the tank my filter is on because that's how strong the water flow is, I even had to remove one of my PH's because everything was being blown around. Now I have a cheaper, smaller filter that's flow is lighter but I am afraid of changing the filter as the media in the filter would be all new. How can I switch filters without disturbing anything? It's an elite fitler for a smaller tank (20g) but I figure it would still help with filteration and still add a little flow. Could I fill it with the water that's in my current filters canister? How do you know if your biological filteration is good enough to chuck the filter all together, I don't want any spikes or a tank crash! HELP

LR is doing the filtration, so you have enough LR in your tank and with the skimmer you will be ok. My advise is to take that filter out. When we had the 55G we did have the filter for a while until we had enough LR then we took it out and there was no changes in the tank, no spike or crash!

I agree. Because your filtration is setup and able to handle the bio load it should be fine to take out all filtration except the skimmer.

but I don't have alot of LR. I am trying to build it up but it's hard to get cured LR out here. I was told I could get an impeller for a lower filter and it would help.

Have you had any luck finding dead base rock or is that not an option that you're willing to entertain?

I can get regular LR at big als which is in a tank but it's pretty yucky looking and I am worried about causing a spike in the tank!

By dead, base rock, I mean aragonite rock that is completely dead and completely dry. This makes it much cheaper than live rock and there's no curing or water spikes to worry about. The only thing that some people don't like about it is the fact that it's not covered in coralline algae and won't be for a few months after it's added to a tank.

Big Al's doesn't sell it? If they don't, maybe they can special order stuff for their customers?
