The thing with carbon, is low quality can leech stuff into the tank. Phosphates, etc. So I'm not sure about this, Don't think I would risk it. Just My Opinion.

I once used some API pharmacueticals granular activated carbon in nylon sock on a skimmer outlet. Well, it broke down, and it got little pieces of carbon all over the tank. Luckily it was just a 10 gallon hospital tank with bare bottom.

I have no clue about that, I wouldn't invest in it until someone who knows the tech specs of carbon comments, personally.

I use the regular lignite here and I don't think it's too expensive, 5 gallon bucket for $60 although it's only 15lbs compared to the 27lbs on that ebay sale, I don't know how they cram that much more in a 5 gallon bucket, it must be almost twice as dense. I don't think dense is what you want in carbon though.

Both are fine for aquariums filters, that's what they sell it for, not for RO units, the RO carbon cartridges are different. The ROX is better in the amount of organics it can remove per volume of carbon, but it is more expensive but you need to use less of it too. For my purposes I use the regular stuff until I have a reason to upgrade to something better.

From what I understand, you get what you pay for. Cheaper brands of carbon can be processed with more phosphates which end up in your water. From what I also understand, advertisers lie about the quality of their products. There's no telling if you're doing the right thing paying nearly twice as much for carbon from a company that claims that its carbon is very low in phophates--but that's exactly what I do.
