I would appreicate suggestions on how to tackle a problem I face.

I have a Panasonic in-line ventilation fan that draws air from over my tank. Learn about Panasonic's FV-10NLF1 As you can see, it draws 0.31 Amps and 36 Watts.

Currently it is wired into a standard switched circuit with a wall switch (just like you would do with a bathroom fan). I would like to be able to control this fan with my new Profilux controller.

Please help with suggestions as to the best way to approach this challenge.

If you're not familiar with Profilux or controllers in general... It has a 120 V power strip and each outlet is controllable. It can also control things with variable 1-10V DC power. It probably has a lot more capability that I'm not aware of yet.

Can you buy a 3 wire plug (whip) and wire it directly to the fan and plug it in to the power strip?

Sounds like you need a relay and either a humidistat or thermostat related probe as the monitored device - your controller reads the probe and opens or closes the relay to complete your switched circut based on your defined parameters. Someone more familiar with HVAC systems should be able to point you in the right direction regarding what type of probe your looking for - and maybe reefsparky will chime in on the electrical side.

I do have a thermometer for tank temperature that I can use for my basic monitored device. It came standard with the Profilux.

I agree with Telgar on this. Unless you are just adding it to a timer, then some type of sensor, I am assuming humidity, needs to be added.

As for a relay, naw. It is a low draw device. Your controllable power strip should be able to handle the draw easily. That is of course, if you have not come close to exceeding the total power rating of the power strip. Then a relay would be a wise choice.

I did something similar with my "bathroom fan" that I have in my fish room. All I did was went out and bought an industrial 10ft extention cord cut off the female end and wired it to the fan. I then plugged the fan in to my Aqua controller and set up the aqua controller to turn the fan on and off if the tank temperature reached "X" and turn it off if the temperature reached "Y" I likly did not need an industrial cord but figured I'd rather have overkill then not enough.

I am agreeing with remick and colorado on this. Shouldn't you simply be able to put a pigtail on it and let the controller do the rest?
