so im down grading to a 29g, the only 2 fish going in are a blue damsel and a yellow and black cromis.
i will be setting the 29 up soon and doing cycle on it before i do anything.
i wanted to add a few more fish, maybe 2 clowns, a goby or bleeny.
i just want some stocking advice on what i could put in there.

    Three to 4 fish max.

It may be challenge with so many Damsel fish in a smaller tank. A larger more mature Damsel has a good chance of bullying the Clowns if they are smaller. Larger adult clowns might bully the both the Damsel and the Chromis.

My 28 gallon tank held a pair of Clowns and a Yellow Tail Damsel, and a YWG. The Clowns tried to kill the Damsel and the Damsel had to be removed. The female Clown has been witnessed biting the old YWG and dragging him around by the tail.

Your choice of fish may work for months but in the long run I believe you will have issues with 3 Damsels in a 29 gallon tank.

You probably won't be able to put much/anything in there if you place the Blue Damsel in.Especially first.I definitely would not mix Chromis and Damsels in a small system...:-/
If you want a good fish to mix with a blue Damsel try a Dottyback or one of these.

If you want a bottom dwelling fish like a Goby, I would introduce it first and allow it to accliamate and then add the Damsel. If you have issues with the Damsel and aggression than you will know that you can not added any other fish to the tank without re-homing the Damsels.

I am actually a little surprised the Chromis has not fallen victim to the Damsel.

If you add any fish I would not add a young small one.

Like Vinny posted a Dottyback should be able to stand up to a Damsel.

Are you selling all your LR from the 40? I would imagine there would be no cycle with using the rock from your 40b I know I had none with my 125 upgrade.

yeah, then you shouldnt have a cycle,

I think the dottyback would work, mine is a PITA, and is quick enough and slick enough that it can get away and dart thru the rockwork where a damsel can't get.
