    Hello everyone,

I need some advice because I have a problem on my hands.

My boyfriend and I bought a 20 gallon tank about 2 months ago and it came with many coral, a saddleback clownfish, and a six line wrasse. Everything was going great until about a month later we added a blue regal tang. We had him for about 3 weeks until he died, we did a 4 gallon water change ( this was the first water change that he was in) and we noticed hours after the water change that he had a bad case of ICH... the next day i came home from work and he was dead.:-/

Then the next week I noticed on my saddleback that he had some sort of string attached to his back fin. My sister said that she thought it was "fin rot", but i didnt know. I could see a little bit of color coming off his back fin, but i didnt think it was anything serious. The next day i came home and he was dead. what do you think could be happening????

what do you think i should do? do you think i should trade in my six line wrasse and leave the tank fishless for about a month and do water changes every week? or should i just buy some medicine? i don't know what could be happening or what i should do?

What kind of parameters are you coming up with? The tang was probably stressed due to the size of the tank. How bout' some test results.

well i dont know much about ich but i think your tang got ich because it was in to small of a tank and that stressed it out and thats why i got that diesase. tangs need atl east a 55 gallon tank maybe more JMO though.

I agree on the tank size is to small for that tang. Also you say that was his first water change. Did you make sure that the new water was same parameters as your tank? Temp/ph/salinity etc.

    .

Well the Tang looked to be doing fine for the 3 weeks that we had him.

The 20 gallon tank is long and we have about 8-10 live rocks with many little places to swim and hide through. He was only about 1-2" long at most, same size as our saddleback.

The night that we did the water change (yes it was the 1st water change that we did WITH the regal tang) he ended up getting a bunch of the white dots on his body, almost immediately.

If you search google images for regal tang saltwater ich, you will see a perfect example of what he looked like. The weird thing was that it came on almost immediately - at least from what we know.

Even when we noticed it, he was still acting regular - swimming around, eating, etc, etc. No noticeable signs of ich - slow, going near top of water for air, etc, etc.

Then the next day.... dead. It all happened pretty quickly, didnt it?

As stated below, your tank is not the appropriate size for ANY kind of Tang. We need some test results to better assist you on your "problem". It could be so many things, we need to do the process of eliminaton steps before diagnosing your problem. For future refer. research before you buy, it could help you save money and lives. Luna

Clown fish are generally a little hardier then the other two fish you mentioned. Surprised a bit about the Tang not making it. I would treat the fish and tank for a month or so to make sure it is out of the system

You said you bought the water already mixed? Is this from the LFS? We have some that do that and I personally don't think that it is a good idea, to many variables. I have never seen a store that didn't have ick at sometime. If that water is coming from the main sysytem there could be a number of things in it. I know there are some fish store employees on the site and I wonder where they pull the water that they sell from? Should be ok if it is not from an active system.
