What is the benefit of the gate valve mod

My benefit is that i have my sump divided and this allows the skimmed and overflow water to be separate allowing only skimmed water to return to the tank. It also allows you to adjust your bubble level a lot easier then lifting the riser tube all the time (plus you stay dry and no hands in the water). Just a turn of the valve and you have wet or dry skim. Also very easy to attach a Micron 50 bag to the tube for more filtration. Another benefit is that you get rid of the round media filter that fit over the riser tube, it is just a nitrate collector anyway. You can pick up the PVC at home depot for just under 10.00 i would not suggest buying it on-line and then you can customize it to what you need.

ONE TO KNOW!!!!!!!! always keep your skimmer and pump in the same sump/tank. If your return pump was to go out the skimmer will just keep on cycling the water. if in two different tank and your return pump goes out the skimmer pump will just keep on going and burn out and you will have a flood on your hands.

Attached is how i have my sump/skimmer hooked up.

Now other mods to the G3 are the Recycle mod but i am not going to be drilling into a 250.00 item until i know all the benefits and they would have to out do what i have now.

 

Having just replaced my Becket Skimmer (with a Gate Valve). I love the G3 riser tube. That's just me. I lived with a Gate valve for 2 years. Not a bad system but so far I find the riser an easier system
