I have a 120 gallon FOWLR. I currently have a Rena canister filter (which I despise and am going to replace), as well as a UV sterilizer and Coralife Skimmer. I am looking to replace my canister filter due to the fact that this one has given me several problems, and is now giving me low flow problems. I have maintained regular maintenance (cleaning, replacing media), and it is the correct distance from top of tank, etc. What I would like to have is your reccommendations before I proceed, because this time I want to get it right, and you guys give amazing info and help;D!!!!!! I am currently looking at the EHEIM II Thermofilter for Saltwater EHEIM Professional II with Thermofilter for Saltwater - Filtration & Circulation - Fish - PetSmart as well as the EHEIM Wet/Dry Canister filter EHEIM Professional Wet/Dry Canister Filter - Filtration & Circulation - Fish - PetSmart

Does anyone have suggestions or reviews of either? I am also open to other filters, these are just the two I have come across so far that I liked. I appreciate any and all advice you can give!

Ill ask the question... why do you want to replace the filter? vs. just getting rid of it?

I find them to be more hassle than beneficial... but that is just me...

Do you find you need one?

Honestly Im not sure if I need it, just have always had it. Im not sure that what I have is sufficient enough to maintain proper water quality. I only have about 40lbs live rock, 2 inch sand bed, then of course my skimmer and UV (plus a coralia for water circ).

I would stay away from the ehiem wet/dry canister if you are using a hang on skimmer. The way it works is it fluctuates the water in the canister which changes the water level in your tank. I would also pass on the eheims that have a heater built in. They have problems sometimes and if there is an issue you can't exactly replace it easily.

I would go with building your own sump. It is easy to do and there are a lot of tutorials on yourtube and melevsreefs.com. You will also be able to make it just how you want it.
