    hi there,
im new to the site and to the hobby so dont get angry that ive brought up a topic that already has been quite well discussed. i thought id post my dilemma in the hope someone can clear it up for me.. as ive read all other posts and cant make much sense what to do, so any help would be much appreciated.
okay here goes, i had a tank setup in my room a few days ago. it is around 220 litres with a 30? litre sump in the cupboard below, it has an overflow box in the centre of the back which drains down into the sump and so on. i have what i beleive to be a durso pipe(long pipe with a U section and a hole in the cap) but the flushing and gurgling noise is quite loud and really annoying.
as i said there were too many different solutions to previous posts similar to mine so if anyone could help me with what to do specifically to quiten my system down that would be great.

    thanks alot

your return pump in your sump is mis-matched with the amount of water going into your overflow. You'll probably need to install a ball valve on the OUTPUT SIDE of the return pump and dial it back some.

If you have hard plumbing (PVC pipe) you'll need a saw, PVC Primer, PVC glue and a ball valve from your hardware store.

If you have rubber hosing going to the returns you'll need a pair of scissors, a ball valve with hose nibs in the correct diameter and 2 clamps.

The actual installation doesn't take long at all. Looking through all the plumbing fixtures at the hardware store to find the one you need, is what takes the most time.

Remember, you want PLASTIC ball valves....not brass ones

+1 ball valve is the way to go, or a smaller pump. I'd go with ball valve ...cheaper !

I would try to drill the hole in the top of the pipe before you go to any trouble. There should be a small hole on the top of the pipe which you can try to drill a small amount larger, lets say its 1/32", bring it to 1/16" or something like that. Also, is the water in the overflow "flushing", as in it will fill up and then drain down, fill and drain over and over. Or is it just loud? If it's just loud then try the hole and also try making the standpipe sit lower in the tank (about 2" bellow the overflow)
