I wouldn't bother with Purple-up. I've used it and didn't care for it. It clouded the water and when dosed alone caused an imbalance between Calc and Alk.

You don't have to add kalk in an ATO. There are simple drip systems that operate independently. The separate drip system lets you control the amount of kalkwasser added without worrying about evaporation rate.

Here are plans for a DIY dripper:

That thread was very helpful. Thanks.
I am planning to use a drip system like that b/c I don't have an ato.
I got a lot of questions answered.
Have you been getting good coral growth?

I agree. I will give the kalk a try. I will go slowly and test along the way.

Yes, steady growth. IMO overall stability contributes the most to good coral growth. A slow steady kalk drip helps me maintain that stability.

when your going to start using kalk i would recommend you use it on a weekend were you will be home to watch and monitor the tank. i checked mine often when i started. the ato water yes is limewater. and its added slowly threw a small dosing pump, when the ato sensor senses a small water drop in my sump.

it keeps my cal at 480 and my ph at 8.2 my dkh was at 12 which is a bit high and im thinking of using carbonated water to lower that.

i agree with m2434 purple up has other things in it, be careful with that. it has iodine

I just set up the dripper and mixed the kalk. I'm waiting on it to settle now. I'm home this week so I'll be able to keep an eye on it.
I don't have an ato, so I'll just top off less manually. I have a mark on the sump anyway, so i just have to maintain that.

I started with 1tsp in 1 gallon of water. I should start the drip today and will test parameters either tmr or Saturday.

thats a good start 1 teaspoon per gallon and dripping is the safer route really.

Ok good. Does the water get completely clear or does it stay cloudy?

It should be pretty clear after it settles.
