Hello, im new to saltwater i recently bought a 125gallong tank i went out and purchased a Protein Skimmer and Over Flow that hangs on the back of my tank , i filled the tank with just tap water to test out the skimmer and overflow to see how it all works, my power went out the other day and ever since my over flow is making an odd noise like a suction sounding noise when i put my hand in the over flow itll stop or if i push down on that sponge thing in the over flow do i need to fill it up with more water it started happening to me when i lost power the other day when i got the power back on 2mins after it went out its been making a noise...not sure what im doing wrong..thanks in advance for your time and concern.

Does the hose have any air pockets in it?

i checked the hoses and no, i was just adding 1 bag of my reef crystal salt and i also have 2 bags of the InstantOcean salt once i added the bag of salt in my bottom tank where my protien skimmer is the noise went away...and now my protein skimmer is producing bubbles which i take is doing its job as before i just had water in the tank to test the new equipment out but once i added the salt noise went away..kinda odd imo.

thanks much for your fast responce i appreciate it a lot, and sorry to be a bother :) youve got a nice tank...and that sound just came back lol

*i just took the sponge thing out of the over flow and rinsed it off it was a bit dirty for some odd reason my dad through fish food flakes into the tank to try and test out the protein skimmer when he got it not sure what he was thinking andin turn i think it got that sponge all dirty near the center it was a little black so i rinsed it out and squeezed all that stuff out of it think its working now i hope...

My overflow made that sucking noise when I first got it too.

I would be careful with the sponge in your overflow. I have a hang on the back overflow and could never get my sump to level out because of the sponges getting clogged and slowing down the waterflow. I was adjusting my return pump every few days and cleaning the sponges often. I took the sponges out and added a hofer gurgle buster to my overflow and it fixed the issue immediately and its way less maintanance now. Info about it and directions to build one can be found here:
