I have a TAAM Rio HF, it has worked well for me and isn't very loud.

Ocean Runner 2500 or Eheim 1260.

For reliability, longevity, and a cool/quiet operation - Eheim pumps are the most popular choice. They do have a heavy price tag to go along with it though.

Rio pumps (from a retailer's perspective) tend not to last as long and have the highest return rate (as in, being returned to us by customers because the pump is defective within a year) of all the pumps we carry.

Danner Mag-Drive pumps are also quite popular and last much longer than Rio tend to. The newer Marineland NJ series (Maxi-Jet Utility) pumps have also been very popular since their release. They are strong, quiet, and the suction cups really help cut down on vibration for in-sump setups.

If you have a little extra cash, Eheim is the way to go! If not, either NJ or Mag-Drive are great alternative choices. We try not to recommend Rio unless you are on a serious budget.

Also - What size drain are you going to be using? What type of marine tank are you setting up? If it is a reef, what types of corals are you considering? Is this tank going to be drilled from the manufacturer?

We can help you narrow it down to what flow rate is going to be best etc. with a little more information!

Don't forget the Maxi-Jet Utility Pumps. Very reliable, quiet, and one hell of a warranty.

I agree with Eheim, that is the brand I use and their customer service is great! I left for a week long vacation and my sister let my sump evaporate dry because she put the top off water in the wrong tank (did not have my entire sump running at the time) and it burned up the pumps... Eheim replaced without question and I have not had any problems since.

If you are going with a fully submersible pump, I would recommend you spend the extra money for the eheim. the 1260 will be the return rate you would need for that tank.

I agree that all the info I had points to Eheim being your best bet. Can anyone chime in on if plumbing an Eheim is more difficult than say a Mag pump? The plumbing runs in metric sizes, right?
