I used a 3/4" threaded to barbed fitting on vinyl tubing on my return. I used thread tape but then again I could be leaking a little but the pump is submersed anyway.

DFS has a chart with a conversion:

    Metric Conversion 9/12mm = 3/8" 12/16mm = 1/2" 16/22mm = 5/8" 25/34mm = 1"

thanks Jay & BRaven for the info, hopefully it'll help the OP if he gets the Eheim. I got a free Mag 9.5 that my LFS is plumbing also for free but I'll most likely upgrade to an Eheim down the line.

How are the Eheims at producing heat? My big complaint with the Mag Drive I used to own was that it evaporated a lot of water because it ran so hot.

I recommended the Ocean Runner 2500 and Eheim 1260 in that order based on testing I performed using a Kill A Watt meter, 1" water flow meter, a 10 psi liquid filled pressure gauge and assorted valves and water sources. I also tested and discounted a Rio HF, a couple or the regular Mags like 5, 7 and 9.5, a couple Quiet Ones, a Via Aqua and a couple others I don't remember.

Based on testing the OR pump was very slightly more efficient than the Eheim meaning it consumed less watts per given amount of water pumped. They were almost identical as far as what they would pump at all heads up to shut off and they were by far the quietest pumps of the bunch and produced the least amount of heat. The Mags were close as far as what they would pump but consumed quite a bit more power and ran very hot as did the Quiet Ones. The Mag also was very noisy even when submerged for long periods and with all the trapped air worked out, they vibrated and chattered. The Quiet Ones had restart troubles from the get go and the Rio HF and Via Aqua both had their magnets swell up so bad withing a few months the impellers would not turn. The HF also warped so it was shaped like a bannana and broke the ceramic shaft eventually.

At one time Aqua Media had the OR pumps priced very competitively and that made them and even better value. Today they are priced about equal to the Eheim so its a toss up.

Since my testing Octopus now offers a pump which appears to be a clone of the Ocean Runners, they are probably all made in the same factory and are much less expensive.
