Try and google "what does a protein skimmer do". And see if you can get the answer you need.

Looks like it'll keep water off your bulbs to me;). Removing your top is gonna cause your evaporation to increase a little. Remember to top off with "fresh water"(without salt).

A couple of things, don't add stuff your not testing for. Most of the trace elements and such will be made up when you do your water change. A skimmer would be a good idea especially for a small tank. Removing the glass top helps with gas exchange and helps with maintaining PH. The glass top also blocks light and traps heat in.
Just some things to think about.

you don't have to have one but would i recommend one? yes a skimmer would be a good addition to your tank.
a skimmer removes organics from your water, basically fish waste and some other stuff. you probably will see good results since your tank has been set up for 9 months. i don't know your water change schedule, but you probably don't do enough for your water to be as clean as your skimmer can make it.
think of a skimmer as activated carbon on steriods(not exactly right but you get the point)

also a skimmer will allow you to have another fish or two(small ones).
