Went on a shopping spree at my LFS today. Picked up an electric scallop, flame angel, blue tang, mandarin, and 2 mystery frags.

The guy at the store said they were an acan and a plating montipora, but he didn't sound super confident. I think the "acan" is either an acan, candy cane, or brain coral...the "montipora" could be just that...I don't know. The frag was sold to me on its own, no plug or anything. I've never seen it done that way. Is that normal? Do I need to attach it to something in the tank or will it eventually encrust/attach?

Below is a video of all the new additions I put together for my family....offers a good view of the mystery frags...all input is greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure what the "acan" is but it doesn't look like a candycane. I really like that scallop!

Thank you! I'm going to try to get pics to post of each mystery coral...since I know the video is annoying.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It does look like Acanthastrea lordhowensis, but a top down image would confirm that.

    Congrats on the new acquisitions.

Nice frags. Be careful with the two tangs though in a small tank like yours is, they can show aggression towards one another. A previous thread of yours mentioned this is a 60 gallon cube which is quite small for tangs. As well be warned that flame scallops have a very poor survival rate in our home aquaria. Please dont be discouraged by this but research is your best tool in this hobby. I too have been sold fish not appropriately sized for my tanks and it sucks reading about it afterwards. Best of luck.

    ^ Excellent advice.

Just to add, you really really want to look into a quarantine system. If you have extra research time or interested I would start researching Marine Ich.

Thanks all for the advice. I know the blue tang is pushing it for 60 gallons (I've been told that a yellow tang is OK in a system my size) but he's such a little guy...and I plan on expanding sooner rather than later.

I know, I know...famous last words. But thanks for looking out!

I have heard similar comments about the flame scallop as well, so we shall see. I'm target feeding him marine snow daily so hopefully that will be good enough.

Did you quarantine them? Could run into a serious problem. 2 tangs in a 60g will add stress. Stress brings on issues
Not the tang police. But would recommend quarantine. I lost all my live stock from ick because I didn't QT. I now QT everything

Says min for a Blue tang is 180g. That's a lot, I'd say 120 min. Tangs swim 200 miles a day in ocean.

I'm just worried and don't want you to have the issues I had

That flame scallop looks so cool! That's a nice pick up. Flame Angel looks good too.

Your LFS clerk was spot on; at least in his ID's. Tank looks pretty young for a flame scallop and a mandarin (Are you familiar with the care of either of these creatures, did you research them BEFORE you bought them?) Flame scallops have absolutely abysmal survival rates, keep one for more than 2 years is considered a success by those who work with them. By feeding daily you mean one time a day? They require almost a constant supply of food, with pristine water conditions, similar to NPS gorgs.

I would try to bring back the scallop and at least one of those tangs. The blue tang needs at a minimum of 150 gallons and the yellow somewhere around 90-100. Do a 3reef search of mandarin care to get an idea of keeping one in a younger tank.

Hate to be that guy, but I don't believe it is fair buying animals on a whim.
