IMO - its not to high - I have a 8 inch finger leather thats at the top of my reef about dead centre and when fully opened with polyps extended its longest fingers are about 5 inches away from surface - bearing in mind I have 2 power heads aimed from back corners to mid point of tank so its in a little area of reasonable turbulence but the fingers gently move rather than get rocked about

I have a finger leather 6" from my water surface under 300watts of halides, and its doinrg great, on the other hand my toadstool leather, started to burn even 12" under the water surface, its the only coral that constantly suffered, so i traded it in, just goes to show not all corals are the same some can take more then others, the finger stays closed up for approximatley four days at a time and then starts to shred its skin before opening up fully again, whenever i did a big water change or even when i added the redslime remover it did this, but the toadstool, in 9 months grew to over 10" wide and never shredding its skin once, not to my naked eye anyway, your leather should be ok, but they do stay closed up if they don't get enough light, bit like when you turn the lights off...

My toadstool leathers don't like much flow.. And when they start to shed, if they need any help at all, I use a turkey blaster carefully..
There's plenty of stuff going thru my tank for filterfeeders.. Which IMO helps ..
And unless you have to... You shouldn't frag something that's stressed..
They are hardy, and do strange things.. I have 3..
You need to get some mushrooms next.. Mine have closed for a week befor..

    Good Luck, Larry

I moved him down almost to the bottom and he is open but not many tentacles showing yet. He is rocking in the flow though but is looking better, I will wait for a couple days and see how he does. I had two St Thomas bubble mushrooms and one was pulled off of the rock by the pencil urchin. and blown away in the powerhead, I just found him in my rubble pile after a few days of hunting. I put what is left of him on a rock way up high and he has a small part of him pointing upward so he might still make it...amazing they go through all that and still live. I also had a Kenya Tree that was totaled out by a big huge snail and never stood up right so after a few days I guess the part that he was hanging from broke off and is somewhere in my tank but I hear they will live in any condition's. One day I will have a normal tank and not a mess like I have been having...it is interesting though...to say the least

you are right Larry it is on the bottom with low to no flow and looking better than it did at the store...might look like hell by beakfast again though.......before that he looked good but then turned a kinda funky red and looked swollen then I put him on bottom....I aint movin him again....
