The only hesitation I have is that my local club was saying that ETSS would stop skimming at the slightest issue, even from a small piece of chaeto...

Anyone have anything to add on that? I am thinking they weren't running enough water through it.

OK, bubbleking is out. Good deal.

Yeah make sure the pump can handle the job for the etss. When I feed I will notice a reduction in the foam due to the sudden change in surface tension in the system as a whole. It quickly builds head back up though, within a half hour or less.

With continuous feeding the surface tension will still be stable a majority of the time. You will still build head and it will still pull out junk. A larger than recommended pump might be a good idea though? Ask the guys who make the skimmers what they think for pump size given often feedings

All I can say to that is that the loss of foam head reports have no impact on the overall performance of the skimmer.

You are comparing a skimmer with a 18" foam head to a needleweel which struggles to produce a 6" foam head. It takes a long time to build an 18" foam head. If you wait for a needlwheel to make an 18" foam head, you will be waiting forever! The big advantage of the downdraft is contact time. The bubbles get far more time to react with the water which in the end, is far more beneficial.
