There's a chance everything will die, I would get everything going again and then let it ride. IMO a water change would just stress stuff even more, but then again I have never had a temp swing that big. The temp is probably what killed them I would guess. That sucks.

I think your right about the water change so altho my nitrate is 20 im gonna leave the water change till after christmas prob about a week then see how all the livestock is. If after a week all seems to have settled would you think it would be ok to do the water change pr would you leave it longer?
    Thanks K

I would think that a water change would stress them also...not sure but I think I would hold off a bit.
Do you have the ability to get Prime or anything else that will lower your ammonia and nitrates? (see you are in UK...not sure what they have over there) Because what will happen is that those are going to continue to rise due to the die off and you will want to neutralize that as soon as possible. I keep Prime on hand at all times
I had a heater failure in one of my tanks....was horrible. The fish had just molted and was stressed to begin with when the heater broke. To top it off the fish was rare an ambon scorpion...and it died within a day. Does seem like luck knows exactly when the worst time to hit is....

In regards to your QT tank...just feed a very small amount of fish food in there everyonce in a while. that will keep everything going

Not really. We are talking more of a product that will neutralize/detoxify ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. A lot like the conditioners that are meant for tap water

Your QT tank doesn't need to be cycled. In fact, it shouldn't be. If you have biofilter bacteria in a qt tank it may die as a result of the treatments you do to the fish. When all that bacteria dies it gets eaten by other bacteria, but the water may become anoxic. Just use a tank with no substrate, clean water, and something to create flow. Keep the water clean by doing water changes.

Oh right! so how do the qura tank work then? I put a little coral sand in the botton that just about covers it witha few little bits off live rock rubble i had spare out off my display tank! I have a book that said you have to cycle the tank before you keep any fish in it! it also said you need a fully matured filter, protein skimmer ect.... basically a mini display tank! so i got a orca tl450.............filled it up bout 3 & half weeks ago and added shrimp to create ammonia which has gone very high and only just dropped! Oh c##P so was that a complete waste off time? i got the tank as my LFs are not to good they have fish with diseases so i wanted to put them in therte first to watch before i move them to my dispay tank. Also to use as a fish hospital! so if any off my fish do get sick i can take them out and treat them ( as i have inverts well hopfully will have if they dont all die!)
