Just read the thread! guess i should take all the sand & live rock rubble out? then what about my filter im a little confused as if you dont mature the filter then shorly when you add the fish there will be a massive rush off ammonia then nitrite and the tank will cycle with the new fish in it????? I understand not having substrate and so on but i dont get not cycling the tank! can anyone exspain this to me?!
    Thanks K
P.s dont you have to keep the fish in qura for at least 3-4 weeks?

In your case, the tank would be a hospital tank. The fish is going to stay in it until it is no longer struggling. It might be in shock right now or it might be seriously injured. Only time will tell if it will recover and how long it will take. For new fish you would typically quarantine for 4-6 wks.

Cycling the tank is not necessary. Just do frequent, small water changes. Some people say you should use half old tank water and half brand new water. If you have an extra filter with a carbon cartidge, use that to help keep the water clean and circulating. Siphon waste off the bottom of the tank often. Also, there are several books on the market that are all about rescuing fish and keeping them healthy. Here are two I currently have:

The Marine Fish Health & Feeding Handbook
    Aquarium Keeping & Rescue

Almost. Look for something that neutralizes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Do not get anything that contains bacteria. That stuff only does more harm than good.

this was how I was told to do a qt tank...have a tank that is barebottom, with no live rock in it. I have a sponge filter that I keep the sponge part of it in my sump (will take couple weeks to seed fully) of my main tank. I then take about 1/3 to 1/2 of the water from my display tank and then add fresh saltwater to fill it up when I need to use it. Then attach the sponge back to the filter and place a piece of PVC pipe in the bottom for the fish to hide in and feel secure.

Reason you dont want to have LR or sand in the tank is because it can hold onto the chemicals and/or the disease itself. This way when you are done with the QT tank, all you have to do is change the filter pad and empty the tank out. If you had to use meds, just run a little carbon at the end to pull it out of the filter.

You monitor your water by doing tests and doing water changes as necessary. You want to keep your params at the same level as your display tank so it is less of shock to them when you place them into the display tank.

And I would not place the fish in the qt tank now...just going to stress them more. If they show signs of needing treatment you can get them out, but until then leave them. If your ammonia continues to increase and you cant find anything like I mentioned, then do several small water changes throughout the day to lower it

Just a update on my unhappy lonely...... he is now very happy and feeding well! i really didnt think he would make it but hes pulled through and has been happy for 3 days now! everything seems fine in the tank so i did a water change today and all looks good. Now im just thinking what way would be good to get my clown thats left on his own a friend? I think it was the female that passed away but im not possitive as they were both quite large in size so whats the best way to get it a friend as hes just swimming quite happy round the tank on his own!
Thanks for all the great advice!
