I have two failing mag 7 pumps. They are both about two years old. They are both about dead.

I won't go into symptoms, and am not interesting in possible reasons why they're failing. I'm finished with them and have no desire to try to save them.

One runs a protein skimmer. The other circulates water between a 30 gallon reef and a sump.

I need replacements, fast. Something *very quiet* and more reliable.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

always been a big fan of Aqua Medics Ocean runner pumps
the 2500 is 625 GPH the 3500 is 850 GPH

also Ehiem universal hobby pumps could be worth checking out IMO

I always likes the lifeguard "quietone" pumps, I had a 4000 running on an older system and if it was dead silent.

Ehiem is the way I would go. Very quiet and very good reputation. I've never had a problem with mine

Ehiem or Little Giant. Also depends on if you can go external. I would get one bigger pump and hook a manifold to it and run both devices off it. Will cost you less in the long run.

Thanks to everyone here for their feedback. I'm going to send karma to all who responded here! THANKS!

I drove over to 'that fish place' yesterday. All of the suggestions looked GREAT. Almost had to flip a coin.

I ended up buying one of the quiet one pumps. I guess the thing that moved me over the fence was the comment that the quietone is really quiet. That's my biggest thing.

I'm particularly grateful for the suggestion to use one pump on a manifold. It really got me thinking! I'll bet that it saves on heat too? But I think I'll stick with two pumps. I've found over the years that the turns in a manifold can drop flow rate. Maybe if I'd use a 'Y' connection it wouldn't be an issue? Probably a dumb mistake on my part not to use a manifold.

I got the 3000 and it is "dead silent", just as you said. It's amazing! Cannot hear it at all -- literally cannot hear it.

My first choice would be an Ocean Runner, I have 4 of them in my systems and they are great. The second choice would be Eheim. I might even be tempted to try the Octopus pumps, they appear to be the same as an Ocean Runner and quite a bit cheaper since OR has raised their prices so much over the last year or so.

Quiet One would be my last choice, in fact I would not even consider it. I have had two literally go up in flames causing damage to my system from the heat and stray power, never again. I though the first might be a fluke but when the second one sprung a leak out the side of the motor housing and sprayed an electrical outlet that was enough!

    Funny you should say this.

Sometime during the middle 1980's??? I bought that lifeguard module thingie for a fresh water aquarium. A cheap plastic part sprang a leak and dumped 30 gallons of water on our apartment floor -- welcoming my new wife (of only a few weeks), and our downstairs neighbors, to my love of aquaruims.

It's amazing how much of a problem 30 gallons of water can be. I can tell everyone that it's WAY more than what it looks like sitting in an aquarium!

I vowed back then NEVER to buy another lifeguard product -- EVER.

Now here it is almost 2010. Last week I figured I'd punished them long enough. :)

Hopefully my forgiveness won't hit me below the belt. Crying out loud!
