    my 50g corner is roughly 22 inches from the water level to the sandbed, would a clamp-on 150w metal halide suffice?

    That would probably be fine, but you will will need some supplement lighting as well.

    if you want mostly softies and non-light demanding corals: yes
    if you want sps dominant: no
    its a little too deep for only 150w... i used to grow frags out on my sandbed in a 24" tank with my 250w and lumenmax reflector.
