I have an old computer sitting in my room doing absolutely nothing, i have a serious algae problem at the moment and i am convinced it has something to do with the chem in the water and of course the lighting. I want to use this old computer ( has windows xp, not toooooooo old) to control the lights in the aquarium, set up a reminder system so i can be reminded of what chems need to be put in and at what times. I believe this will be most useful when i am not home and i have someone baby sitting the tank, makes it easier on them and lets me enjoy my time away. I am looking for both hardware and software, please if you have any suggestions let me know. I will put up pictures showing how the initial setup will be.

Using an X10 controller would be the best way to go. You can control hole house security systems with it. I run most of my tank with X10. Just Google it and you'll see what I mean.

Pretty cool idea, however just don't create something that is way over complicated that only you can use it. ( I have been known to do that now and then)

my lights are on a timer. the digital one was $30 and it controls my day time lights and my lunar lights. ( there are cheaper versions.. and I tried them, digital is much easier)

With a PC, it always needs to be running etc.

X10 is the way to go for controling things. there is software available for tracking tank parms etc.

keep posting with what ever you do.

I just spent the last 2 hours pulling algae out, and moving around the rocks a lil bit. Hopefully everything goes back to normal, this has to be the worst algae i have had. I saw the X10 system, but i don't understand how it controls the lights or pumps, i have spent to much money on stuff i never needed, so i am tring to make sure i buy the right things this time.
Also, i have a tuxedo Urchin that is a moving ball of algae...is that ok?
