I want to get a phosphate reactor but need some help on deciding which one to get

    Ive been looking at:

Bulk Reef Supply GFO and Carbon Reactor

it's $40.00 lots of good reviews

BRS GFO and Carbon Reactor - English

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Phosban Reactor 150

    it's $35.00

Amazon.com: PhosBan Aquarium Phosphate Reactor 150: That Fish Place - That Pet Place

    -------------------------------------------------------

    Nextreef MR1

It's $70.00  but looks really nice that kinda alot though

Amazon.com: NextReef MR1 Media Reactor: Kitchen & Dining

    ------------------------------------------------------

So anyway im thinking im gonna go with the BRS reactor or the phosban unless you guys convince me that the nextreef is worth double the price of the other ones.

Im going to run this in the stand so will a Maxijet 1200 be big enough?

and gonna use Bulk Reef Supply GFO Granular for media

1 Pound (453 Grams) Bulk GFO Granular Ferric Oxide - English

so let me now what you guys think

Go with the BRS, I think is has a greater capacity than the Phosban reactor.

For a 65G system you are only going to be using about 6 table spoons of GFO media so you do not need a big reactor, the Phosban reactor is more than enough for your needs, its all I use on a 100G system with a 30 G sump. Get that and a Maxijet 400 or Minijet powerhead and you are set.

Do not follow BRS directions on amounts, for some reason they recommend twice what every other vendor recommends and its way too much and could cause bleaching of your corals. For 65 gallons start with 3 spoonfulls in the beginning andwork up to the full 6.5 spoonfulls over a period of a couple months so you do not shock your system. I use the BRS pelletized GFO and really like it.

I would agree to an extent. I used to have a pair of TLF reactors. Did they work, yes, very well. It is the ease of maintainence that makes the difference. The TLF reactors forced you to completely take apart the reactor setup to change media. The BRS reactors are super easy to change media. Turn off the power and drop the cartridge.

    The choice is yours.

    thanks for the help

are you sure a maxijet 400 is powerful enough though since this will be in the stand?

You can, the medias all come from two major companies anyway, they all get it from the drinking water industry where it is used to remove arsenic from drinking water. Bayer Chemical makes most of it in Germany and Severn Trent licenses it in the US. Its all pretty much the same with the exception of granule sizes or being pelletized. Some sell it dry as GFO and others sell it wetted as GFH or granular ferric hydroxide, same thing either way. I buy it in bulk when I can and from BRS or TLF when I can't.

I use a MJ400 on mine. All you need is about 60 gallons per hour to keep the media slightly boiling or tumbling.

Great info, I think I avoided the bleaching issues but can't swear since I was having lighting issues at the time I added my BRS reactor. I will cut my usage in half that should be a nice savings on GFO.
