That is incorrect. Clownfish start out as unsexed. Say you have 5 clowns. Only 1 will be female, and 1 will be male. The other three will remain unsexed. Clowns are also able to switch back and forth between male and unsexed as the heirarchy changes. But once female, they can not change from it. If the female is removed, then the male it was patnered with would become female, and remaining clowns would establish the male ;)

You need to get a pair if you want to breed clownfish and you need to sex the fish. And that’s a quite an interesting part – believe it or not, clownfish are all born as males! When they are adults, the largest and the most dominant fish of the group will undergo a sex change, and become a female. The second largest usually becomes the breeding male, while all the other fish remains juveniles and gender-neutral. If the breeding female disappears, the breeding male will change to a female, and so on. Buying an established pair maybe a reasonable way to go, but it is often better to have a group of juveniles growing up together. If you choose to buy a pair you should look for a pair that goes around together. Sometimes you can be lucky enough to get a pair already spawning. Anyhow, establishing an adult pair can be a little tricky; and you need to keep your eyes on them to ensure that the female doesn\'t kill the male.

i pulled the above off of Breeding Clownfish

So I let the new one out of the breeders container and they were pretty passive with each other for awile then they started to fight again but not as badly so I just kept an eye on them. They sparred for about 10 minutes off and on and my old one finally gave into the new one. And it is currenty swimming next to it twiching an not fighting so I am happy.

Just thought I would share that

That's an interesting article, but again, incorrect. If you want links here are some:
Marine And Saltwater Fish: Breeding Clownfish

Advanced Aquarist's Online Magazine - Aquarium Fish: Reproduction and rearing of ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) in captivity.

    Clownfish Information

This information can also be verified in the book, Clownfishes: A Guide to Their Captive Care, Breeding, and Natural History, by Joyce D. Wilkerson. This book is generally regarded in the hobby as hands down the best book on all aspects of clownfish, particularly with breeding. An excellent read, I recommend it to anyone that has a clown.
