Ok well after the whole power company thing and loosing just about everything in the tank I’m thinking about going bigger sooner since I will have less to transfer over. Should have it bought built and cycling in about six months. My new tank will be a 125-150g drilled cube with a 40-50g sump. My current tank is a 55 gal with about a 10-15g sump 24in long x 10 wide x 12 in tall HOB overflow. My hob skimmer is old dead and not worth fixing. The skimmer is going to be in the sump of the new set up. I was wondering if there is a inline skimmer I could get that would not have to be placed physically in the sump. Then be able to be used in the sump when I swap over to the larger set up. Trying to avoid buying equipment twice lol. Looking for something in the $450 price range of course if there’s something out there that will work well cheaper I won’t argue lol.been looking at some of the reef octopus but not sure which would work in both application

There simply isn't a skimmer that will span that range. They can only reasonably span about 2x the volume. Outside of that it will run like crap. You will need to get a skimmer for the new setup and call it good. Do lots of water changes and use your old tank as a holding tank for new fish. That's about it.

Just go on Craigs List or to your local reefers and buy some cheap used skimmer to get you by. It won't break you and you will be better oof getting the skimmer that will be right for your next tank.

If you are not a member of a local reef club, become one. You can probably pick something up less than that to get you by.

A SRO 3000 would be good. the Bubble Blaster pumps are nice. Look into a Aquamaxx AS250. They are not new, just different importer. $400. They used to be quite good. A Vertex 280. If you go the top range of 200g you could get a SWC 230 cone. A little more than you want to spend, but nice pump. Too big though if you go lower.

Yes they do. But think of it as a tweak and not a fudamental design change. I would get one if it were me... but you can still out perform a crappy cone with a well made cylinder. At least these days if it is not a cone it still has smoother transitions to the neck in most skimmers you see.
