my ph is around 8.1, i have been using reef buffer from seachem. the problem i'm running into is that now my alk is at 19 dkh. i heard that i could use baking soda to raise ph. would it raise alk also?
i know if you raise calcium then alk would decrease and vice versa. my calcium was at 380 ppm when i tested alk at 19 dkh. i dosed enough calcium to bring it up to 450ppm, haven't tested since but ph is still around 8.1, mag stays around 1500ppm.
any suggestions about how i can get ph up to about 8.3 without throwing alk through the roof?

Adding carbonated water a couple of ounces (50-60 ml) at a time will lower your dKh. When my dKh gets too high I add it every hour or so and test dKh (and pH) every 3 hrs until dkh is within range. You can then add more Reef Buffer to bring up your pH.

wow, never heard anybody running there alk that high! i guess if (cal, mag, alk) is in the right ratio with each other it wouldn't hurt the tank buddies.
how long have you been running them parameters?
i thought it was the washing soda that had to be cooked? or maybe it was baking powder or something can't remember, but that regular arm and hammer pure baking soda was okay right out of the box?
anyways, if it raises alk also i might as well continue using the seachem reef buffer. what if lets say, during the summer months the wife decides to raise all the windows to let in fresh air, would my ph jump into the 9's, since that would flush out the carbon dioxide in the house? that would be real bad!!!:-/

the parameters are in correct ratios, so no worries. my system is running close to maximum. some dont recommend it, ive never had a problem.

mixing this wont raise your pH: 1 box of cooked baking soda with 6 boxes of non cooked baking soda.

If you let in fresh air, that will raise your PH too. Thats the issue am having with my house. Once I open the house up, my ph shoots from 7.9-8.0 to 8.3 in a matter of 30 mins to an hr. Luna

because the Ca is 500, ratio: 20 Ca to 1 dKH. i keep my Mg around 1500 but should probably be around 1600.

yup, acropora only, the consumption rates are very high, but those parameters will work in other tanks as long as the ratio is correct
