What sort of filtration system should I use for a 30 gal tank? I want to grow coral and have a few fish. I am definitely looking for a skimmer but don't know what to put in a sump (or even if I need a sump). I am just starting and have plenty of time-I don't plan on stocking it anytime soon.

    Thanks for your help.

I do not run a sump on my 80 gal. Only I have a FOWLR setup as of now since I am just stating out in the hobby. You will need live rock and a protein skimmer. What Is A Berlin Filtration System and Why It Is Used In A Saltwater Aquarium
Someone else could probably help you out with lighting because that is a main component in growing corals. The skimmer will depend on if you want a sump of not, as you can buy an in-sump skimmer rather then have one hang on the back of your aquarium. If you want HOB, Look at the octopus brands or the AquaC Remora Remora Hang-On they seem to be highly suggested.
    Good luck and keep researching
Hope to see pics of your tank soon!

On 30g setup, I would just run a really good skimmer and call it good. I don't think you need a filter set up or a sump for your system.

Great-Thanks for your help. Do you guys think that a skimmer rated for a 100 gal tank is a good idea then? I'll just have a few powerheads and a HOB skimmer.
