Going with a Reef Tank is the highest level of commitment in this hobby in my opinion Not a day goes by where there isn't SOMETHING to do you are always Topping off water, Cleaning Glass ,Feeding fish and coral, Testing Water, Adding Chemicals (Calcium.Etc), Making water to do a water change. and on and on. Plus there is the expense of the corals and livestock. There is a big time commitment too. You may want to consider a FOWLR Tank. That means you will have live rock with a selection of fish . You will have a lot less to deal with in terms of maintaince. Just a thought. It doesn't have to be a "reef tank" to be able to bring the beauty of the ocean in to your home.

    welcome to 3reef!
i think everyone covered the basics, i'd just like to add that if you do a reef, you're going to hate that 55,i have one and it's just too damn narrow,by the time you get enough rock in there you're gonna notice that theres no place for fish to swim, also all the really interesting{imo} fish need a bigger tank.

Sorry for the delay, but I would like to say THANK YOU to every one. I finally decided after a long time thinking, that I think I'm going to downsize, Ill start off with a nano tank (even tho they are harder), around 10g - the only factor riding this is the costs of getting every thing started. So I'm going to put the 55 for later, and start with this 10g tonight. Ill put pics up soon!

well that could be a good way to get your feet wet, no pun intended, test the waters, there I go again, but really, try it out, with out spending your life savings. And see you may hate it and feel it a chore, I dont personally see how anyone could, I LOVE mine and do something to it everyday, and love to watch stuff grow.

While you are waiting to set up the 55 gal I have only one bit of advice, READ, and then READ, and when you get done with that, READ, and post questions here, there are some very smart people here. And they are very nice also.

Good luck and welcome to the world of reefers .LOL 8)

Hey! Welcome to 3reef. I personally, got into this hobby without a freakin' clue what was going on. But, I sure did catch on fast!! I found very quickly that this hobby takes a lot of time and love!
If you don't love your tank, it most certainly will not love you back =)
Keep it clean, check your levels, and love it. Hope you grow to enjoy reefing as much as I have.
