I'm building my first saltwater aquarium, and have a question on the bulkhead size I should use. It's a 75 gallon tank, and I'm planning on running with the Bean Animal overflow. I purchased the 1800gph overflow from BRS, and the rest of the equipment I've received so far from Marine Depot. When I placed my order on MD, I ordered 3x 1.5" bulkheads for the overflow, and a 1x 3/4" for the return. Is 1.5" too large for the overflow?

Here's a list of the rest of the equipment:
    Berlin Sump BS-2 30x14x16
Reef Octopus 6 In Sump Pinwheel Skimmer
    48" AquaticLife T5 HO w/4 Lunar LEDs
AquaticLife Four Stage RO/DI 100GPD Power

I'm planning on running a Danner Mag-Drive 9.5 for the return, but not hard set.

    Any help would be awesome.

That mag 9.5 is 950gph max. According to the beananimal site, 1.5" pipe will handle over 2000gph on a siphon. I'm using 1.5" drains on my 180 gallon tank with a rio hf20 and I have to close the gate valve over 3/4 to stop gurgling. You may be able to get away with smaller pipe but I'm not sure. Exactlyobp may chime in here, I think he used a smaller pipe in his setup. Hope this helps.

    Welcome to 3reef Jason!

Ok im confused. You said you bought "the 1800gph overflow from BRS" but you wanna go BeanAnimal? Youd have to DIY or have someone custom made the tank pretty much.

Edit: I checked the BRS site, I had no idea they made stuff like that! It would be cool if you could attach it to your tank. Now, is your tank acrylic? If its glass, it might not work. Silicon wont stick to acrylic, only works on glass.

When I built my 90, i went with 3x 1" for the drains. But you could make it work. Youd have to close the ball valve almost all the way.

Well crap... That's the item that I purchased, I did not realize that I couldn't use silicone to attach acrylic to glass. Not sure what to do now. I will reorder my bulkheads though, will go with 1". Any suggestions?

EDIT: At this point maybe it will be best to run a C2C overflow. Either way I still really want the Bean Animal for both the quietness and the lessened chance of flood. Well, between the bulkheads, the overflow and the overflow cover I've wasted a little over $100.

You dont have to be too bummed out. There are so many equipments, lights, extra tanks, sumps, pumps etc sitting around in everyones house! You might be able to return the overflow box to BRS too :)

Now I was just posting about Bean on another reefer here. Fly5150 is helping him too, well i guess Ill quote myself:
Again, coast to coast overflow is the way to go. The overflow you got from BRS is only 12" long. Mine is 38" long (its not full C2C technically). The longer overflow box is, the thinner water sheet is, and its quieter.

I'm not too bummed out, although I can't return the overflow, I was too excited when it was delivered the first thing I did was open it. :) Who knows, in the future it may come in handy for some trading. I will call our local glass place Monday and see what they say about cutting some glass for me. I guess now it's up to me for accurate measurements.

Also, thank you for your help!

This may be a dumb question, but I swear I have seen lots of tanks with plastic overflows siliconed to glass - why would that not work? Do plastic and silicone not bond?

That overflow is a little small, which will make it a little bit louder but you could still use it if you wanted to install glass behind overflow box and then use some silicone to hold the overflow box in place. I built mine out of glass, then went to plastic depot and had them laser cut some acrylic with teeth, then siliconed the acrylic to the glass. People say silicone wont adhere to acrylic, but I've read more then a few posts about success using silicone.m you may be able to silicone it in place as is. Not too sure though.

I may be able to get it to work, but right now I'm sitting here with an empty tank, and can go either way. Might save myself a meltdown down the road. ;)

Are there any guidelines or recommended dimensions on a C2C overflow?
