Welcome! The bigger the tank the better and it will be easier to care for in the long run. Also a saltwater tank is something you spend money on almost monthly because of water changes dosing or what have you just a FYI for you. :)

Hello again and thank you everyone for the tips and help! from what I am looking at my 900$ just became close to 1500-1700 lol I kinda knew thats how it was gonna be but I'm good at spending money so I don't mind the investment. I race RC cars IDK if anyone on here knows much about them but it is a very expensive hobby 500-1600 for cars and up keep can be close to 100-150 weekly so I am used to spending money lol like I said I have wanted a SW fish tank for a LONG time I'm done waiting! and to answer a few Q's No I know ZERO about SW or FW fish or taking care of them. I live in Davenport,Iowa pretty slim on the SW shops around here. Really I want as BIG as I can get without the lvl of problems rising. Well thats all I got today lol Thank you all again for the replys!

yo man i just got into this whole salt water thing about 4 months ago..so im new at this too but let me say i love it..first off get a good light (not a cheap one you get what you pay for) also to be honest the bigger the better get the biggest tank you can fit, afford, and handle. i startded with 40g and within 3 weeks i went up to a 75g and im so glad i did. and let your tank cycle dont blow it off trust..hope this little bit helps..

    good luck

^+1 on the craigslist idea. I actually bought my 40 gallon off craigslist. I got the tank, stand, canister filter, protein skimmer, powerheads, and a few other misc items for $200. Basically everything I needed besides the lights.. How big of a tank did you want or have room for? That would be a good starting point I think.. Remember the bigger the better for your first tank.. You'll have more room for error.

i would just like to point out taht if you look on craigslist you can find tons of fullly setup large tanks with rock and fish then you could buy that and fix that up with whatever you want! no cycled at all none of that bad stuff nobody wants. i have done this with the majority of my tanks i started only one 20 gallon tank but sold and traded my way up eventually to several large tanks. i think this is the way to go expecially on limited funds like i am.

Welcome to 3REEF. Saltwater is awesome. I have both FW and SW and spend the majority of my time watching the SW tanks. You can find used tanks sometimes in pawn shops too at a good price. We had several of them over the years and sometimes they will come with fish. We once had a 125 gallon complete that we sold for $100 dollars before I got into the fishey thing.

There are a lot of people out there that have tanks they want to get rid of and we get many call from people wanting to sell them. Contact your local Pawn Shop, talk to the manager and tell him what size you want. Many times if they don't want them, they will pass on a phone number. If you get one at a good price, don't forget to buy them lunch.::)
