Are all your levels in check? How about lighting/flow do you have the coral positioned properly in the tank? What are you feeding?

might be RTN on your monti cap, I would snap off that dead spot.

If your birdsnest is still doing fine, then it is most likely not a parameter issue.

handle it however you want, just do your self a favor and read up on RTN and decidee for your self if thats what you have. RTN (rappid tissue necrosis) wont ever get any better, only worse unless you remove the infected parts.

Is it a new piece? I could also be monti eating nudibranches.

it looks like another coral stung it, any corals near it that could shoot a web out to it? I would snap it off and glue it to a rock and see if it survives. My orange monti looked like that when my purple one slightly fell on it. It started dying, then after a week of the other monti not touching it, all is well and it looks perfect again.

If it's easy enough to snap it off and move it, I'd try that. I've done that with corals I thought had rapid tissue necrosis and they've survived.

Is that a hydno behind the cap? That green piece you can barely see kind of looks like one, if it is then it is getting stung. Hydno is a very very agressive coral and will sting and kill anything near it. I had one shoot its stinger tentacles across an entire large rock and sting and melt my acans one night. My hydno is now bannished in the corner by itself.

If it is not anything stinging it then I think it is RTN or Monti Eating Nudi. How long have you had the monti? Is there anything else around the tank that could have stung it?

I personally would be safe and clip the dead piece off to prevent any other problems
