To me in my simple opinion trying to compare a hardy coral with a fish reference . I'd say the open brain is about has hardy and easy to keep as any hard to keep fish. Ohhh say a Emperor Angelfish or some other angels or butterflies ... pristine and stable water is a must Nothing I'd want to buy and add to a new system not ready for it.. You never did say what type of lighting you are trying to keep this coral and anemone under.. if you did I may have missed it i do hat sometime's LOL

How big of a tank is that little bit of lighting supporting? MH lighting will not protect your animals from the spikes that your water will experience while it's cycling but it can't hurt.

I have no doubt that the coral could bounce back but certainly not under 40 watts of lighting in a 2-3 week old tank.

I had one exactly like that one. It's not bleached. Mine lasted for almost 6 months, during which I was learning and made some dumb mistakes and lost it. Let me guess, as you can't tell from the pic, the center is kinda chartruse?
I made the same mistake your making, got it too early in my tanks life cycle.
