Sounds like it is going well, good!

Algae bloom, death and taxes......... unavoidable.

I HATE it when ballast go bad.

Yes, especially when the tank is only a few weeks old! Obviously a fault from the factory... And i'm taking the algae as it comes. My 46 bowfront is going on 9 months or so and i'm now finally able to look into my tank without seeing annoying hair algae or cayano. I think i'm better prepared for it this time around. RO/DI and not overfeeding are the two biggest things that helped me!

    Updates

The koralia nano and the hydor rotating powerhead are in from big als ginormous sale. Also decided to ditch the bioballs in the back and put in some cheato. The pictures are really ****y, but you can get the idea. I removed the false bottom in the second chamber and made my own out of light screen. Underneath that is a big bag of carbon. Above that is where the cheato will sit. I found a small Compact flourescent puck light to fix to the outside of the tank.

Hopefully the new ballast comes in soon for the actinics because there are a few nice chunks of zoas waiting in my bowfront for it!

The new replacement ballast was on my doorstep this morning. It only took a week! And on top of that, they sent me 2 replacement ballasts not just the one that had gone bad. (Mistake?) Now the only question is should i keep it for a spare, or sell it and order Foster and smiths Nano Fiji live rock package... Hmmm....

Here is an updated FTS with the actinics running again. Sorry about the poor pic quality, taken with my phone.

Nope, i've been using RO water now. I initially set the tank up with tap water because i knew i was gonna get blasted with algae anyways and didn't really feel like wasting RO. (I get my RO from the school wet lab and its a pain to haul water from the 4th floor or the Natural Resources building down to my car and home...) But now after several changes with the RO the algae is at a minimum!

Yea, that rock work isn't permanent. Going to be ordering the nano rock package from liveaquaria sometime soon here. Then i'll get it in there so i can clean the sides, for the most part at least.
