New bulb/light help

I have a 20 gallon "nano" and I had a 175W pendant hanging above it. I liked it fine (it came with the tank from craigslist), but it was large and wanted to make sure I got a light made for tanks instead of an industrial warehouse light fitted for a tank. It wasn't sleek either and my wife def. did not approve.

So I traded it for a 150W Coralife HOT. I have struggled since getting it though. The tank temp got too hot so I had to take the top off. It was almost 86 degrees the day after I put it on. With the lid off I can stay at a steady 78 degrees again. That is not my problem though.

I am buying a new bulb to replace the existing one and all the HQI bulbs I read about say to have a UV filtering glass between the tank and the bulb. That light has nothing between the light and the water. What kind of damage can be done to the inhabitants if I leave the lid off from the UV rays? I have noticed tankmates not happy recently (I have had the light for about a week, lid off for 3 or 4 days), but I also had some higher that preferable salinity levels. I took care of that today, but wanted to rule out a UV problem with this light as the culprit. Does anyone see an issue?

 

Upon further inspection.......there is a glass tube the bulb goes in. Sorry!!

I think I am safe and it was my high salinity level that was the problem.
