Your f/stop is the size the aperture on your camera opens when you take a pic. The larger the number, the depth of field increases(entire pic in focus). The smaller the number, your focal point will be in focus, but the rest of the pic will be blurry.

The trick is finding a balance where you get good pics without needing a tri-pod.

If you press and hold the av button by the screen and turn the wheel by the shutter(white balance), you can also do some light adjustment tweeks.

The trick is using a custom white balance setting to get away from any light/color wash that confuses the camera, such as, actinic lighting.

f/8-f/12 is a pretty good number to practice with. f/32 and around there will probably require a tri-pod because of a lack of light. f/32 would be a good number to pick outside in the sun or bright light.

if your camera can take it crank the iso. it helps when you are trying shoot things in low light.

Av is deffinately the way to go unless you are using a of camera flash... which at that point is useless anyways and you would have to switch to M (manual).

    what model is the canon?

F stops have nothing to do with color. They will increase your depth of field (or narrow it). The larger the aperture (f/stop) the more shallow the depth of field. For instance, f/2.8 has shallower depth of field than f/11. However, when you move to close the aperture, now you need a slower shutter speed to make up the lost light. I rarely shoot anything with an aperture smaller than f/5.6 unless I need a lot of depth.

Those are beautiful corals. The dendros are really something, if I had a skimmer I would get some. The last dendro image is really nice, love the color.

Improvement in images is noticeable. Are you using the macro setting?

    thanks
ive had my eye on that dendro in the show tank of one of my lfs and finally told the guy that i would pay anything for it. and basically it cost me an arm and a leg. most dendros ive seen have more orange and this is more straberry red.

no macro. i just dont have enough control with it. i use a full manual setting with no auto focus. the tripod makes a huge difference
