    We've got a Flu305 & a HOB on our 47g
Carbon in a bag! We change the carbon once a month but we clean cans & rinse the carbon bag every other weekend & have ZERO Nitrate problems!
We were told a million times cans are a no-go for reefs... NOT!
We've had ZERO problems... *knocking on wood right now!*
    No worries!

This thread is very promising for me. I am starting up my 125g and have an eheim 2217 and a fluval 303 that I am planning on using along with a remora c pro hob protein skimmer and a emperor 400 bio wheel and have gottne many different opinions on whether it will work or not. I'm going to give it a shot and maybe move to a sump down the road. It seems like I should be fine if I keep up on the maintanence. Do you think the biowheel is overkill?

Your liverock and sand is by far the biggest biological filter, the bio-wheel would not be nessesary, but you could "gut it" and use it for a small hob refugium.Thats actually one on my next projects, when i get around to it,lol.

    Mike,
if were talk'n 55 gallon, yup...BUT,I would think 125 gallon on 300 series canister is pushing it...JMO ...but fluval does make some big boys...just not seeing a 303 on a 125 gallon...I'd go sump etc..but again JMO, I think fluval has the FX5 and some bigger I think...but FX5 is for 150 plus gallons up to 400 I think...couple hundred on ebay:) they are monsters !

I would be using the Fluval to supplement the Eheim 2217 which is rated for up to 159 gallons. I used to have it on my 55 so figured I would add it for some extra filtration. Do you think this would work?

That's actuall a pretty cool idea. I was thinking I would use the bio wheel in the beginning as my LR populates itself because I will probbaly start with mostly dry rock with a few pieces of LR. So my thinking is that the wheel could help out until the rock catches up?
