hi everyone, wasn"t sure where exactly to put this post but guess its fine here!!!!

basically i was at my lfs yesterday and was offered a part time(weekend) job in there!!! i run my own cleaning business so the crap money they have offered me doesn"t worry me. its the fact that all my weekend time will go and my good lady is expecting our 3rd child!!!! is the job really worth it??

that said,i know the staff in there very well and the experience/knowledge im sure will be invaluable but the reason im putting this post to you is, do you guys/girls think there is any scope for a new career??obviously ive never done any thing like this before but i wonder if it could be the start of something new for me!!!!! (dont get me wrong im not looking to become a marine biologist, but i would love to head that way!!!!lol)

i would really appreciate any comments, similair experiences, or shop owners input??!!!!! ;D

    THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE,CHEERS;)

IMHO, I would not take the position. From a person who has been a hobbyist for a long long time and also has seen the dark side of the industry, I would not suggest doing it. Working at a LFS will seperate you from a hobbyist and you will see the hobby differently.

Once you are earning a living doing something, it becomes work and not something that you do for fun. However, it is very cool to be able to do something that you are truly interested in.

My LFS is fantastic, but the owner has NO tanks at home. Says he does enough with them during the day and doesn't want to have to go home and do the same thing.

But if it is something you want to do part-time, for the experience and discount ;D - go for it....I would work at my lfs part time if I could.

You already said its not good pay and I can tell you from being in landscape and doing all the water features I end up meeting alot of the wholesalers in the area and none of them take the hobby home with them. Every lfs owners I know love and appericiate tanks but keep them at the store. I dont know if it would help with moving into your career but if its extra money you are in search of and you just want the experience them maybe it is something to consider but imo these are the things I would consider.

    big thanks

WOW thanks for the replies and opinions. tbh i really DID think about the discounts and seeing the array of life etc, BUT and there is always a but, i do agree with the "darker" side of it and the family time... lets be honest it is only retail...
    however,
im going to see "john" regarding the position tomorrow and although i know him outside of the job i will have to decide on what to say. im thinking of perhaps a trial period for the weekend position, that way im not saying no or yes. what do you guys reckon there???

just wanted to mention that i do know 2 out of the 4 staff there very well and they have worked for the "company" for years".. so im guessing it cant be that bad.:-/

!!!! also BIG THANKS for the congrats !!!!

That stinks you believe that b/c if you believe the above, then you can't ever do anything for work that you are passionate about, because then it will become "work".

What's so bad about work? Are there days when you need to do a water change on your tank and don't feel like it? Is your tank "work" then? If you sell $100 worth of frags, should you drop your tank b/c now its no fun b/c you made money at it?

In regards to the original question in the thread, I'd go with a trial period. That way you can see if you like the job, if they like you, and if your wife doesn't want to change the locks on you while you are at work for taking the job!
