I just installed a JBJ Arctica 1/10 chiller on my 55g. My question is that right now my tank temp is 88f and my target temperature is 77f should i bring the temp down slowly, like 2 degrees a day or should i just set the chiller at 77f and let it cool the water down as fast it can?

before I added my chiller my tank was at 83 degrees - its now at 78
with the 5 degree difference, I set to 78 and it took a few hours to reach it

temps on the reef can vary by that much in 24 hours

with yours at 88 - and a target of 78 - it might be worth staggering that drop
so I might set at 83 now, bring tank down to that as its back inside the safe zone IMO anyway and then 24 - 48 hours later take it down the other 5 degrees

the corals would no bother, IMO, but the relatively quick drop of 10 degrees could trigger off a parasitic attack on the fish

I would try to have it down by tomorrow morning. Not too fast, but not as slow as 2 degrees a day. As stated 88 degrees is in the danger zone by far. I would think more damage would be done staying that high rather than bringing it down a little quicker ;)
