I had the oppertunity to get some corals from a local fellow today that is closing down his tank. He still has some frags but I was nearvous about adding to much at one time. I hate to pass it up but wasent sure. I in transit had a pulsing xenia had come in contact with air in the bag and the water was splashin over it for a short time. I put it into my tank and noticed its kind of bleached. It took a few hrs but its opened up and pulsing. Its still white in some spots and seems almost sick but healthy if that makes sence. What sould I look for with this and its a good size of them. I had also got a brain coral 2 very large they look like elephant mushrooms as well as some buttons and xenia that doesent pump it just flows as the water goes through it like wind haha(very neat).I think branch xenia. Last there is some pom poms and a green looks like a tree with no leaves. The guy told me they are all easy to keep but im very new to corals so im very nervous exp about the pumping xenia. Everything else looks like it mad the adjustment wull and is opened up. I also dont know to feed them. I am a newbie but understanding this much better now and only jumped into these corals because he was getting rid of them. Also he gave me a maroon clown that was hosting the mushroom. I think my sig has my tank specs but its a 220 water parameters were tested today this am before I went to get them and everything is in check but goes ph8.2 sp gravity is 1.026 kh10 nitrite 0 amonia 0 calcium 480 mag 1280 alkinity was correct. Sorry for the run on sentence and ill post pics later tonight to get the true id. Thank you

How old is your tank to begin with? Xenias are very hardy, so you should be good as long as your tank has been up and running for a bit (your new corals may just need some time to get used to your tank). If you are feeding your fish well then the corals will get extra nutrients from that, as well the corals you got are photosynthetic so they will use the light as their main source of food.

Usually it's not too bad if corals come into contact with the air. I have taken my soft and hard corals in and out several times with no ill effects. Xenia sometimes have trouble being transported and may even "fall apart" when placed into a new tank. I would just keep an eye on it. As to feeding the corals, for soft corals, a pinch of some sort of invert food or reef supplement is fine. There are lots of products out there, just find one you like. For the lps such as your brains, they will take meaty food such as mysis shrimp or squid, just make sure the pieces aren't too big.

Thanks. I got home tonight after going out for a while to see the xenia pumping and looking allot better then earlier. The pom poms are all open the yellow buttons are all open. The other xenia is still flowing nicelly. the green finger leather looks garker on one side but healther. The 2 xenias are quite large the leather is medium, the brain is large, and the others are large frags, couple small misc frags I dident list but what are the values of these? I dont know what they sell for but they sure look cool and I would like to do more corals. Oh the tank has been running 10 months almost 11

    Nice pick ups!
What do you have for lighting?
As for the soft corals that you have, they do not need to be target fed as they are all photosynthetic(contain zooxanthellae) making them symbiotic corals. Nutrients that are in your water will be sufficient along with the lighting to feed and offer them the beneficial nutrients to keep them alive and thriving.
The colors of your corals may look different from what they looked like in the guys tank before you as the lighting scheme(kelvin) and lux will create different color representations, but this doesn't in any mean that your corals are not healthy!
Take it slow, mainly with fish life then invertegrates with corals being able to be added sooner and more so that with the livestock...
Remember also, that their are different forms of Xeniafrom different parts of the world and from different biotopes within the reefs such as lagoon, reef flats and back reefs. Having said this one xenia colony could be viewed differently than one colony from the same reef at a deeper or shallower area upon the reef!

I dident know allot about coral said I wasent going to do them in the tank now im hooked. I have sundial t5 ho lights in the tank. I am getting the mh lights and going to keep the mh and the t5s on it. I have the corals about half way to the top of the tank for the lighting being wear compared to what the tank can be. The guy I got the stuff from had simmular lights but mine penatrate a bit better so I was thinking that is why they look so different/
