Okay so there it is. My new cup coral and my first one.
I know it doesnt look ideal, but it was only $5. The lfs was trying to get rid of their smaller corals quick and make room for big ones they got in.

    So here are the questions....

Is this thing dying, b/c in the upper side of the cup, it is white?

    Good deal or not?

Anything I can do to help him thrive other than keeping calcium and the alkalinity up?

    Thanks in advance.

I also picked up some beautiful zoas. Ill snap photos and post when they open up again...

looks like a good find, yep the middle is dead, but the edges look good, the white is probally from placing it high in your tank, time to relax and wait, keep the parms up , what is your light levels? cup are lps and like lower wattages and flow levels. love the colour

I thought that cup corals like high flow and med-high light....

    Guess i need some clarification....

I am running pc's and the I like to consider my lighting around medium at his level in the tank. Will the white area come back as red in the long run? And also, how fast do these corals grow?

I dont think that is a cup coral...it is a scroll coral or a monti capicornis. But cup corals if I am not mistaken are another name for sun corals.

Either way I would frag that puppy up right away and try to salvage part of that. The middle is definately dead (Unless it is a monti cap and they took another cap from that area...which case would cause a darker area, cant tell. On the upper corner where their is white is dead...frag that part off.

Maybe somebody else will chime in, but I would personally frag that middle off and just go around the fleshy part....

Monti grows fairly fast and do well. They like a mod to high light.

    Frag it up.

Well, first read a lot about fragging.

    THEN frag it up.

So I take it that once a part dies, it spreads or something?
