A new, free and easy-to-use marine algae ID database has just gone online that 3reefers may find very handy - Marine Plants of Pacific Panama was the joint effort of Smithsonian marine biologists Diane and Mark Littler and the office of Bioinformatics. Using hundreds of photographs, the guide was designed for us non-scientific types to quickly be able to peruse algae by major groups (Browns, Greens, Reds) or use traditional dichotomous keys. The guide contains 87 new records of marine algae for Panama and 32 new records for the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Although the focus is on algae around Panama, the guide is so intuitive that one can quickly make associations between the family groups and to algae found in our aquariums. There are entries for various strains of Caulerpa, Halimeda and Codium as well.

Marine Plants of Pacific Panama is certainly worth a look and many thanks to the Littlers for compiling this data. :thumbs_up
