Two days ago I bought a Diamond Goby to clear up a little bit of algae and alot of debris (not sure if he'll just eat the algae or not) from my sand. So far he has been VERY skidish and doesn't stray far from his cave. I have him in with a couple black clownfish and a hippo-tang (blame my wife), and they are very curious about him (non hostile). He has been coming out and sifting the sand near his cave (not alot of algae, but some debris), but anytime I try to feed him the other fish scare him off. Should I be concerned about him not eating yet, or just give him some more time? Also, not sure how much he should be eating with him sifting the sand for food also.

Did a search and found some good info on it, but wanted to get some advice for my specific situation. Thank you in advance.

It's a 75gal. o_O thats not good.... So they are sandsifting for organisms then? On to do my research thought I had before, obviously not enough.

Well... this is what I get for making assumptions. I had heard how well they do to rid a tank of algae and debris and thought it was due to them eating it. When in reality they are searching for worms and small crustaceans, and covering the algae/debris. Pods would be the main source of crustaceans correct?

I've had the tank setup for about 7 months now, not sure how much of a food source will be available for him currently as 2/3 of the sand was "live" and all the rocks have been dry rock without added organisms attached. I had bought 2 packs of live pods from Reefcleaners.com, but they arrived while i was outta town, and I dont believe any survived being stuffed in the hot mail box for a couple days (I put them in just in case though).

Well.... looks like I've got myself in a mess. The ONE fish that I've wanted the most is a mandarin dragonet once I had a well established pod colony. If I understand correctly that will put the goby in direct competition for food with the mandarin correct? Possible to sustain both of these fish in a 75g. if I establish enough pods?

Bump... Anyone have any thoughts on this? Will I be able to sustain the 2 or only be able to have the one? Anyone had both, and if so what size of a tank?

A Mandarin will likely get beat up by the goby as they compete for territory. Also that blue tang is going to get increasingly more aggressive as its space gets smaller and smaller ;-)

Ugh.. this sucks. He had better better be worth it. Believe me I tried to fight off the hippo tang, but it was a battle I wasn't going to be able to win "If you're going to spend all this money on a fish tank then I'm going to get a Dory!" blah..

anyone else on keeping both/caring for the Diamond Goby? Hearing feed it brine shrimp/mysis shrimp/meaty pellets may due also.?.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I have had to feed gobies with a turkey baster aimed at their burrow for months until they became less shy. Usually it was Rod's foods after I had already given the other fish some.

Please have your significant other watch this video.

While I understand her "wanting" this particular fish it really is not fair to the animal. Please explain to her that there are plenty of beautiful fish available that are appropriate for the size tank you own. I am sure she will not like the results of adding this fish to your tank and maybe it will be a good lesson for her. Responsible reefkeeping is something we all should try to achieve.;)
    Good luck
P.S. As has already been stated and acknowledged by you a Mandarin MAY have enough to eat in your tank but NOT if there are other fish in the system competing for the same food. Not sure if you have a refugium but this is a must IMO.
