The return pump should be no greater than the overflow capacity. This is done after calculating the head of the pump in your system.

Head is the amount of reduction in flow caused by friction and the height you are asking the pump to return the water to your tank. A pump with 250 gph at 4 foot head would probably be OK.

So head is how hard it is for the water to get back to the tank? Cause its going to be pretty tricky since my sumps going in the closet. Its going to have to go up 1', over 2', up 2', over 1' and its there. I mean that is a terrible description of what i have to do but does that help at all?

Just ordered the RO/DI unit and the phosphate/carbon reactor with stuff to put in it. How long will that last? a gallon of carbon and a half gallon of GFO. Still need help with the return pump also

how big is the tank again? with only a 300 gal rated overflow the Mag 7 you mentioned will work even if you upgrade to a larger tank later, just add a ball valve on the return line to control the flow rate.

Sorry for the late response but the tank is a 55g and the sump is a 38g. But whats a mag7? you must have mistaken someone else saying this cause i dont even know what it is haha. Thanks for that idea im going to get a ball valve on the return. Should i throw one on the plumping going to the sump also? or not needed?

Also this is a basic question and inda off topic....but what material should i use for the baffles in my sump?

You are going to about 6 ft of head with the description you gave.
You won't need one to the sump.
    Use 1/4" acrylic for baffles.

So with 6 feet of head i should get what pump?

Home depot sells acrylic right? and why does everyone use hard pvc for their plumping instead of a more flexible material?

Thank you for you help btw!

I use a ball valve on my return for the 80g. It allows me to control the return rate and have the pump run a little bit more efficient with resistance added to to the output.

So its better to go to big and ball valve it then come a little short and not have enough circulation?
