hi there, i got a question i'm sure somebody can answer, i got a fruval 405 for a year now, it was working fine it just started to leak, got that fixed but i was thinking of putting a different filter system in there because it is not fun to clean out the fruval, have to carry it ( it's heavy ) and i constantly have to buy filter media what is getting expensive. So i was thinking of getting a 20gal long aquarium to put underneath my tank ( 75 gal ) Is that enough and should i set it up as a refug or something else and do i have to buy media for it and i need to clean that out. I'm new to all this and i don't even know where to begin. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks:-/

Well... it depends. A sump is just a glass box and is not a filter of any kind. A canister filter is a just a mechanical filter. You can put media in them but anything like that is proprietary and cost too much. So getting a sump will allow you to run a sock for a mechanical filter that you can reuse, and you can run a media reactor with cheaper media. If you want to put in a fuge then you added a biological filter. It's up to you what you want for your system.
